The Jewish Foundation is Here For those in Need Back

For Those in Need

If you are in need of financial assistance, the Maimonides and Devorah Funds at the Jewish Foundation can provide anonymous financial assistance for emergencies and/or medical needs. Requests are made on your behalf through our community’s rabbis, Jewish Family Service and other referring agencies. If you are in need of assistance, please contact Jewish Family Service, your synagogue or other community organization so they can request money from the Jewish Foundation.

For Those Interested in Giving to the Maimonides & Devorah Funds
Thanks to donations to the Maimonides and Devorah Funds, the Jewish Foundation has been able to provide financial assistance to Jewish individuals in our community as needed and as requested by our schools, rabbis and Jewish Family Service.

Distributions from these funds were needed

  • to provide necessary assistance to enable children with medical needs to attend
    our local schools
  • to enable children with medical needs to attend therapeutic camps
  • to assist uninsured families with insurmountable medical bills
  • to assist parents who have taken unpaid work leave to care for a sick child
  • for Jewish Family Service and local Rabbis to provide much needed money for families facing eviction due to a job loss and/or the illness of a family member

Although the Foundation has a very substantial and strong endowment, and has the ability to fund community grants and initiatives, the Maimonides and Devorah funds are the only discretionary money available to distribute for those in need.

We feel that we, as a community, need to have these funds available to be able to respond directly and immediately to individuals and families with medical and emergency needs.
Both funds were established to follow the precepts of Maimonides who, in defining levels of tzedakah, deemed one of the highest levels to be matan b’seter (giving in secret), when the benefactor has no knowledge of the recipient and the latter has no knowledge of the individual source of charity.

Although the Foundation will of course acknowledge all donations to the Maimonides and Devorah Funds, the recipients do not know who their benefactors are, and the donors do not know whom they are benefiting.

How To Donate
Donations can be made to either or both funds. For more information on the Devorah Fund, the Maimonides Fund, or to make a donation to one or both of these funds, please contact Lisa A. Stanger, Esq., Director, Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven at
