On June 3, 2010, as part of the merger of the Jewish Federation and the JCC,
the Department of Jewish Education (DJE) became the Center of Jewish Life and Learning (CJLL).
For more than 25 years, the Department of Jewish Education has been at the forefront, creating a wide variety of meaningful educational experiences, establishing programs such as MAKOM, A Taste of Honey, Meyuchad Special Jewish Education and more, and bringing the March of the Living, The PJ Library and the Israeli Young Emissaries to our community. The launch of the CJLL will build on these programs, strengthen Jewish education and literacy across the spectrum of JCC programming, and serve as a community resource for other
educational providers.
The CJLL Mission
The Center for Jewish Life & Learning (CJLL) creates high quality educational and cultural opportunities for vibrant Jewish life in the Greater New Haven area. We strengthen Jewish identity and involvement by advocating for Jewish education as the highest communal priority while building partnerships with other agencies and organizations.
Five Questions
Each year, we uphold the tradition of the youngest child asking the four questions at the Passover seder. This tradition has its origins in the Talmud, where it was originally expressed as a natural curiosity at something that was different, yet rooted in tradition: “They filled a second cup. At this stage the child questions his parent. If the child is unable to ask, his parent instructs him to ask, ‘Why is this night different from all other nights?’” (Talmud Bavli, Pesachim 116)
As the DJE becomes the Center for Jewish Life and Learning, it is only natural that this same curiosity occurs, and that we are inclined to ask questions about how this newly named entity will impact our community. Just as the Talmud provided those at the seder with four questions to help prompt natural curiosity, presented here are five questions which we hope will do the same. And, just as the Talmud encouraged those at the seder to continue asking questions, we welcome your input and further questions in this process.
When Does a Lifetime of Jewish Engagement Begin?
By supporting children and families on their Jewish journeys through programs like The PJ Library, Shabbat Friends and parenting forums, and services such as the JCC Family Center, the CJLL is committed to providing strong building blocks for Jewish engagement among the youngest members of our community and their families, each of whom are potential future participants in all aspects of Jewish life.
How Do We Instill a Strong Sense of Jewish identity in Our Teenagers?
Because Jewish learning and engagement in the teen years is a critical factor in determining adult Jewish behaviors, the CJLL is developing new methods to reach this increasingly sophisticated audience by going beyond traditional means, and with greater emphasis placed on experiential learning, expanded partnerships and technology.
Why Do We Need Centers of Excellence and Innovation in Jewish Learning?
Excellence and innovation are the keys to maintaining quality Jewish learning in our community. CJLL is committed to providing satisfying and impactful Jewish educational experiences by enhancing what exists and developing a broad range of program options, through both traditional and non-traditional approaches, including partnering with local and national educators and organizations.
What Supports Lifelong Jewish Learning?
Jewish learning and living is a lifelong commitment and endeavor, and the CJLL is committed to maintaining and creating a variety of opportunities and entry points for community members of all ages and backgrounds to engage in a wide range of Jewish learning experiences including classes, films, the arts, and trips.
Where Do I Fit In?
This may be the most important question of all. The CJLL wants to work with you - the members of our community - in this creative endeavor. We hope you will join us.
