The Ethnic Heritage Center is hosting an exhibit called Ethnic Wedding Traditions from August 1 to December 30, 2010. Wedding customs, superstitions, traditions, and artifacts of its five ethnic historical societies will be on display. Each society has prepared a unique component to the exhibit which includes wedding attire, wedding announcements and invitations, a six foot chuppa, a catuba, wedding breads, a ring bearer pillow, wedding music, etc.
The Ethnic Heritage Center is a unique association of five New Haven area ethnic historical societies: Greater New Haven African American Historical Society, Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society, Italian-American Historical Society of Connecticut, Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven, and Connecticut Ukrainian-American Historical Society. The Ethnic Heritage Center, founded in 1988, is the home for archival collections of our member societies. The Center is also the custodian of the New Haven Public School records dating back from the 1850’s. In house is an enormous doll collection with over 200 dolls in authentic ethnic costumes from around the world and in history.
Exhibit will be open Tuesdays – Thursdays from 9 – 3, Fridays from 9 – 12, Sundays from 2 – 4, or by appointment.
