The Jewish Community Relations Council applauds today's [August 28] federal court decision to block key provisions of Arizona's immigration law, which was to go into effect tomorrow.
U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton temporarily blocked a requirement that Arizona police check the immigration status of detainees they reasonably suspect of being in the country illegally; she also blocked a provision that would make it a crime for immigrants to be in the state illegally.
The JCRC has spoken against racial profiling in our own community, as a violation of basic human rights. We applaud the court's decision to strike down measures that would have encouraged racial profiling in the state of Arizona.
