Beginning in preschool and culminating with the Bar/Bat Mitzvah class, the goal of our Religious School is to impart to our children a knowledge of Hebrew, Bible, Israel, Jewish History, Folklore, Prayers, Jewish Values, Laws and Customs.

It is said that: "True education is more like 'lighting a fire' than simply 'filling a pail". We believe that those words are even truer with regard to Jewish education: The ultimate goal of our Hebrew School is not only to "fill" our students' minds with Jewish knowledge, but to show them how Judaism can be a source of spiritual joy, strength and guidance in their lives. Indeed, we aspire to teach Torah to our children in such a way that they will choose to lovingly transmit it to their own children one day! We accomplish this through many experiential activities, such as celebration, song, dance, story-telling, arts & crafts, drama and hands-on workshops.

Our Religious School classes are held on Wednesdays from 4-6PM and Sundays from 9-11:30AM. On Sunday mornings, Congregation Or Shalom's Religious School will now join with Congregation B'nai Jacob's Religious school. The name of this new Sunday program is: YAHAD, "Together"! YAHAD will offer a separate class for every grade level as well as an exciting, "cutting edge" Hebrew curriculum and many wonderful curricular enrichments. YAHAD will take place at the JCC of Greater New Haven, and its director will be Cantor Malachi Kanfer. On Wednesdays, classes will be held at Congregation Or Shalom with Or Shalom students only. Rabbi Wainhaus will of course continue to play an important role in the school on both Sundays and Wednesdays.
