Online learning with Rabbi Carl Astor resumes on Zoom this month. Prayer & Liturgy with Rabbi Astor is not a class, but rather an open forum to learn together and share ideas. This month’s conversation will focus on these questions: What it is that we pray for during our worship service (or any time)? Are there things that are appropriate to ask for or inappropriate? Are they in any way related to the words of the prayers? And what is it that we expect/hope will be the results of these prayers?
Rabbi Astor moved to the Westville neighborhood from New London, where he served as rabbi of Congregation Beth El from 1981 to 2013, retiring as Rabbi Emeritus after 32 years. While in New London, Rabbi Astor was president of the New London Clergy Association, a faculty member at Connecticut College, a member of the chaplaincy board and ethics committee at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, and a mohel. Rabbi Astor was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he also earned his PhD in Rabbinic Literature (Midrash) in 1996.
