Arnold M. Eisen, chancellor emeritus and professor of Jewish Thought at The Jewish Theological Seminary, who is considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on American Judaism, will be at BEKI Friday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 9.
Prof. Eisen’s most recent book, Seeking the Hiding God: A Personal Theological Essay, will be the focus for the Shabbaton. To quote Prof. Eisen, “we will do something not often done in Conservative synagogues: talk about God.”
On Friday, Nov. 7, the 5 pm service will be followed by a Shabbat dinner at 6 pm. Reservations are required for the dinner, a vegetarian meal with vegan and gluten free options to those who request them; the cost is $15 per adult, $7.50 for children 12 and under.
Prof. Eisen will give an introductory talk Friday at 7 pm, “Seeking the Hiding God Together.” This talk and dessert, tea, and coffee are free and open to all, though registration is required for planning purposes.
During Shabbat morning services on Nov. 8, Prof. Eisen’s d’var Torah will be “Thinking Theologically with Torah.”
After Kiddush lunch, the 12:45 pm Shabbat Schmooze will feature Rabbi Eric Woodward and Prof. Eisen in conversation about Seeking the Hiding God.
On Sunday, Nov. 9, join us again for 9:30 am minyan, followed by light refreshments at 10:15, and a talk at 10:30 am by Prof. Eisen on “God, Faith and the Future of Judaism in America.” Afterwards, books (with author signing) will be available for purchase until noon. Registration would be appreciated.
This Shabbaton is made possible by generous support from the James M. Shure Educational Fund.
