World Premiere of Avodat Hakodesh, a work for Choir and Chamber Orchestra by Noah Dokko Stein, on April 19, 2026
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Yale University senior Noah Dokko Stein will conduct the world premiere of his original composition Avodat Hakodesh on Sunday, April 19, at 4:00 p.m. in Battell Chapel on the Yale University campus. The hour-long work sets selections from the Saturday morning Shabbat service to original music for choir and chamber orchestra. Stein will lead an ensemble of Yale musicians in the premiere performance.
Avodat Hakodesh joins a distinguished lineage of concert settings of the Jewish Sabbath service. Taking inspiration from Ernest Bloch’s 1933 work of the same name, Stein’s composition employs contemporary musical language and techniques while remaining accessible to audiences accustomed to traditional classical concert music.
The composition represents Stein's senior thesis in the Music Department, where he has concentrated in composition while also pursuing studies in conducting. Following graduation, Stein plans to pursue a Master's degree in choral conducting.
The Shabbat service texts have inspired composers across centuries and continents. Stein's Avodat Hakodesh continues this tradition while bringing a young composer's voice to sacred material that has resonated through generations.
