Campaign Update - June 20, 2014

At last week’s Annual Meeting the 2014 Annual Campaign sat at $2,228,357. Our cadre of solicitors have been hard at work in the intervening 10 days, having raised an additional $112,000, so that as the first day of summer nears, we have raised $2,340,528. There is still another 6 weeks left in the campaign year and we could use as much help as we can get. If you have a hour or two you can give to the campaign to help us have a strong finish, please let me know.

Last Friday we were shocked to learn of the kidnapping of three Israeli teens, including one American. In this day of social networking it has been fascinating to see how people are connecting on this truly sad subject. There is a petition drive that directs signers directly to the www.whitehouse.gov  website (over 18,000 so far), a Bring Back Our Boys Facebook page and two different hashtags: #BringBackOurBoys and #EyalGiladNaftali in the Twittersphere.  But using a public forum such as Twitter can have its negative side as well. If you look on the #BringBackOurBoys site, there is a fair amount of Israel bashing going on. Communities across the country are holding prayer vigils.

We, the New Haven Jewish Community, will gather Sunday evening at 5:30pm at the JCC to express our solidarity with the three families and all Israelis. All we can do is hope for good news. It is times like this, the kidnapping of teens in Israel, the bombing of the Chabad House in Mumbai, the painting of swastikas on a synagogue (my own in Silver Spring) that the importance of community rings so true. We can come together, give each other the support and know that we are not alone.
