Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven Expresses Gratitude and Hope
Following Guilford Menorah Vandalization
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 10, 2025

New Haven, CT — The Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven extends our deepest gratitude to the Guilford Police Department for their swift response and ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of our community. We are also profoundly moved by the outpouring of support from our neighbors, faith leaders, and civic officials who have stood with us in the wake of this troubling incident. It is in these moments that we are reminded of the resilience, kindness, and unity that define our community.

While the vandalization of the Guilford Public Menorah sponsored by Chabad of the Shoreline is disheartening, it does not reflect the spirit of this town or the values we cherish. Acts of hate may seek to divide, but they will never overshadow the light of hope, tolerance, and perseverance.

“This aberration does not represent the Guilford community. For twenty-five years, Chabad of the Shoreline’s menorah has illuminated Guilford without incident. Throughout the years, many residents from different faith communities and from across the political spectrum have expressed their appreciation and pride in having a menorah on the Guilford town green. With G-d’s help, we will continue to share the menorah’s light for many years to come!” said Rabbi Yosse Yaffe

Rabbi Danny Moss of Temple Beth Tikvah added, “Guilford is a community of inclusion and respect. This act of vandalism is not who we are, but rather, a painful reminder that antisemitism continues to exist. It is up to all of us to stand together and call out hatred whenever and wherever it appears.”

The rise in antisemitic acts across the nation and the world is a sobering reality that cannot be ignored. Gayle Slossberg, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, emphasized the importance of taking action: “We will not be silent in the face of antisemitism. It is imperative that we continue to educate, advocate, and work together with all communities to ensure that hate has no place here. We are heartened by the support of our neighbors and reaffirm our commitment to building a future defined by understanding and respect.”

The Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven remains steadfast in our mission to promote education, build bridges between communities, and advocate for a world where all people can live free from fear.

As we approach this difficult moment, we do so with unwavering hope. In the face of darkness, we will bring even greater light.
