Time is running out for the Jewish year and also for the opportunity to see Joel Silverstein, The Hebrew Bible: Real and Imagined. This art exhibition will close August 18, to be replaced by BEKI’s annual “Off Our Walls” High Holy Day exhibit, featuring Jewish-themed artwork from the homes of members. Silverstein’s inspiration comes from 19th and 20th century European expressionist painters, pulp magazine illustrators, mid-century movie epics, National Geographic photos and superhero comic books. His goal is to find a contemporary language that can describe the sacred and the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, merging traditional Talmudic interpretation with postmodern takes on painting, movies, comics and picture theory.
