Dear Friends,
Do you remember how we felt a few months ago when hatred, with machetes in hand, walked into a synagogue on Har Nof and slaughtered 4 rabbis and maimed others as they prayed??? The horror of the deaths in a holy space, with men wrapped in
their prayer shawls and tefillin on their foreheads and arms, moved us to tears.
Wednesday night hatred entered in the historic Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, SC carrying a gun in Charleston, SC and killed 9 people, seated in a prayer circle studying the Bible.
How can we respond to such evil? On Monday we can redouble our efforts on gun control. On Monday we can commit ourselves to working harder for racial equality. Tonight and on Shabbat we can join, in sorrow and in unity, with the community at a prayer vigil at the Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church on 242 Dixwell Avenue from 6-7pm.
150 years after the end of the Civil War, Charleston joins Ferguson, Staten Island, Aurora, Baltimore and North Charleston where racial injustice were most visible this year. 150 years after the end of the Civil War. Tonight we have an opportunity to pray that it must stop. Please join me.
